Boulder Valley Rotary Club

Boulder Valley Rotary has traditionally planned one major fund raising activity each year. The event always looks to the community and the friends of Rotary everywhere to help make it successful. For the past 10 years this event has been held in the early spring and has combined a variety of activities including a silent auction, a live auction and a reverse raffle. Each year a good time was had by all while significant funds have been raised for charity.

Each year, the club raises the funds it needs to support all of the club activities. In no area is this more obvious then Community Service. Over the past 10 years the Boulder Valley Rotary Club has funneled over $250,000 (a quarter of a million dollars!) into the local community through local charities and non-profit organizations.

The club is planning the 2004 event to be an exciting

Centennial Project update October 2003

In the summer of 2002 Rotary International asked each Rotary Club, worldwide, to participate in the Centennial celebration of the founding of Rotary. The Centennial will be celebrated in January 2005.

After a request by Rotary International President Lundeen (2002/2003), in late summer 2002, appointed a chair to look into this important request from Rotary International and a committee was formed to look into potential projects with members for BVRC and the other Clubs in Boulder.

Rotary International requested that the project be a collaboration of the local Rotary Clubs, be visible in the community and give proper recognition to the Clubs sponsoring the project.

After many meetings and many discussions the Boulder Valley Rotary Club along with the Boulder Rotary Club and Flatiron Club settled on a project late in 2002. The project agreed upon was a "room of reflection" to be built in the new Boulder Community Hospital, which by the way just opened for business in September 2003.

The Centennial project, which when all said and done will span three Club presidents. President Stull (2003/2004) along with incoming President Candy Wither (2004/2005) inherited the on going project and have been busy finalizing the funding of the project and planning for the celebration in 2005.

Thanks to all the Boulder Valley Rotarians, our Club, has fully funded the $8,000.00 share of the project, we were responsible for. The other Clubs are busily finishing their fund raising activities. When all said and done the project will have been funded to the tune of $40,000.00 by the local clubs and will provide a highly visible acknowledgement of Rotary in the Boulder community.

If you get the chance please stop by the hospital and take the time to see our project.

Incoming President Candy Wither will be busy early in her year and especially the late quarter of 2004 and the first month of 2005 planning for the Centennial celebration and the official dedication of the "room of reflection".

All Boulder Rotarians should be proud of this Rotary International effort.

IT'S "COATS FOR KIDS"/ "SHARE A COAT" TIME AGAIN

The 2003 coat drive is now underway. We need the help of every Boulder Valley Rotarian for this year's coat drive. There are jobs for everyone and the following is a tentative list of the work and dates.

A letter to the schools will be followed up by telephone calls to determine which schools will participate. Also, local businesses will be contacted. Coat collection boxes will be delivered on Thursday, October 16th. Coats are to be picked up from the schools on October 30, November 13, with the final pick up on Dec. 4. We will also collect used books from the schools for distribution to the Boulder Valley Public School Title 1 - Books in Homes program.

Art Cleaners will be cleaning the coats this year and their help with this project is greatly appreciated. The cleaned coats will be transported to the Secure Care storage facility at 63rd & Arapahoe on Nov. 2, Nov. 16 and Dec. 7. They will then be sorted according to size on Nov. 8, Nov. 22, Dec. 13 and Dec. 19.

The coats and coat racks will be delivered to the distribution location at the old Granville-Phillips Building (same location as last year) on December 18. Many coats will be distributed to various charities during the collection period, but the final distribution will occur on December 20 and 21 at the as part of the Holiday Food Basket Program.

If you have not had an opportunity to volunteer please consider one of the opportunities mentioned above. Sign-up sheets for use in volunteering your time and effort will be available at the meeting and you can always talk to Bob Harberg or give him a call at (303) 441-3124. SIGN UP TODAY. You will find it very rewarding.

Polio Eradication
10/17/02

In 1985, Rotary launched PolioPlus, one of the most ambitious humanitarian programs ever undertaken by a private entity. The program was designed to provide funds and volunteers to inoculate the children of the world against polio and other childhood diseases. The PolioPlus program was one of the first international activities that the Boulder Valley Rotary Club participated in after the club was founded that same year.

By 1987, Rotary had raised over $247 MM for the program. The PolioPlus program was in large part the catalyst for the World Health Assembly's adoption in 1988 of the goal of polio eradication. Rotary takes pride in its commitment to help achieve a polio-free world by 2005. Rotary increased its support and through 2001 has contributed an amazing $462 MM.

Today, thanks to Rotary and its global partners, the world is on the threshold of eradicating the poliovirus that has destroyed so many lives and hope. Polio cases have dropped by 99.8 percent since 1988. More than two billion children have been immunized, and four million spared death or paralysis. The job is not completed until there are no more cases of Polio. The last 0.2 percent will be the hardest part.

The biggest obstacle to victory is the battle against polio is financial. Despite the enormous resources already committed, more money is urgently needed to buy vaccine and to deliver it to children in the few remaining countries where the poliovirus still circulates. To help close the funding gap, Rotary has announced a new one-year polio eradication fundraising campaign. The goal is to raise $80 MM in donations and pledges by June 30, 2003. The funds are to be collected in total by 2004 and are now part of a larger campaign supported by the Gates Foundation, World Health Organization, United Nations Children's Fund and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, that is seeking $275 MM to complete the job.

Rotary has motivated each club to participate in the campaign. The Boulder Valley Rotary is participating in two ways. First, the club has initiated a pledge drive for it's own members. Second, the Boulder Valley Rotary club has agreed to participate with the Boulder Rotary Club and the Flatirons Rotary club to organize and hold a public fund raising event for the Boulder valley, specifically to raise funds to eradicate polio.

The Polio Eradication Campaign within the club has been very successful through the fall of 2002. Pledges and contributions have exceeded the district goal of over $100 per Rotarian. Planning for the public event is underway with the event now being planned for winter of 2003. What the calendar for specific details as they come available. The proceeds from the both activities will significantly help Rotary complete the job that began in 1985, the eradication of polio from the planet.
